Black bears are not only intelligent, but are also very skilled. With their paws they can open screw caps and door bolts. Their sense of smell is seven times better than that of dogs. They feed on 75-85% fruits, berries, nuts, grass and roots. They also eat small insects such as ants, bees, termites and carrion.
They hibernate. When black bears sleep during the winter months, they only breathe once every 45 seconds and their body temperature is 4-5 degrees Celsius lower. They do not drink or eat during this time. They also don't «go to the toilet» ;-)
